Founded by Patricia Kluge of Charlottesville, VA, the St. John the Baptist of the Woods Foundation was established in 2003 as a 501c3 nonprofit organization set up as a charitable and educational entity to provide relief to the rural poor, distressed or underprivileged individuals and families who might not have access to services. Patricia states, “Children are our future and our biggest natural resource so it is important to focus on them and their education.” She does this with her husband, William Moses, through their Kluge-Moses Foundation, which is devoted to education. Under the Kluge-Moses Foundation’s umbrella is the St. John the Baptist of the Woods Foundation and its tent pole project, Club Yancey, an organization close to Patricia’s heart. Club Yancey assists and enhances the educational and community opportunities for underprivileged children that attend Yancey Elementary School in Esmont, Virginia with an after-school curriculum designed to expand their educational, social, cultural, recreational and nutritional spheres.

The goal of the St. John the Baptist of the Woods Foundation is to lessen the burdens of government by conducting programs designed for the rural youth of southern Albemarle County regarding:

  • Resource management: literacy, self esteem, introduction
to arts and culture, service learning
  • Financial literacy education for youth
  • Community food and nutrition programs (i.e., addressing
    youth obesity and dental hygiene)
  • Housing preservation and homeownership opportunities
(i.e., such as self help housing)
  • Other social services, where such members of the public
might not otherwise have access to such services
